Activity Summary

For this video, I decided to do a virtual field trip.  I chose a grade 5 outcome (the rock cycle) and filmed a few locations.  I would have liked to have found a few more sites with different kinds of rocks, but I found enough to be able to practice editing and to see if the concept would work.  In order to increase the effectiveness of the video in the classroom, I collected rock samples from each location, and the students (in pairs) will have at least one sample from each location in front of them while watching the video.   According to Mayer (2020), “People learn better from a video lecture when they are asked to engage in summarizing during learning.”  I thought that students matching the rocks in their sample box to those in the video would afford students this opportunity.

The video includes a Google Earth Pro tour that I recorded to show the locations.  There is also an underlying music track, as well as titles and transitions.  In addition to video, there are also some still pictures.
