Topic: The Rock Cycle
Learning Outcome:
After this lesson, students will be able to:
-Identify local rocks as being classified as either igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary.
-Explain the life cycle of rocks.
Learning activity:
This activity will be done in the classroom. After watching the video, students will be placed into groups of 3. They will receive a small box of selected rocks. They will sort the rocks into the 3 categories, and then will check with other groups to see if they agree. The class will meet after all groups have finished, and there will be a discussion about why groups chose to categorize the rocks the way they did.
I chose this video because it will be motivating for the class. There are very good examples and explanations given by an engaging speaker. The pictures are clear and overall the video is age appropriate.

Hi Geoff,
I agree that this is a pretty good video. You may want to link to a couple of minutes in when they start talking specifically about rocks. You may get a sense whether the introductory portion on the role of a geologist is engaging after you run it a few times.

Hi there Geoff, I agree that your video applies to your learning outcome. I particularly enjoyed the three distinct sections of the video which describe some of the physical texture and appearance differences between igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Those sections would be very helpful to your students.
Carson 🙂
